* Why our weddings are different
Sy Chung originally came from Hong Kong and migrated to Australia with his family. With a passion for performing arts, he received his Piano AMus.A diploma at 14, won many awards in local speech and drama competitions, and excelled in extra-curricular Chinese studies. At 16 he was a recipient of the Minister's Award for community languages, he was invited to join the SBS Radio's Youth programme after high school.
After being admitted into Law school at university, Sy Chung began his radio career as a host on SBS radio. Although he was originally training to become a journalist, he became drawn to entertainment and became the founding producer and presenter on the original SBS PopAsia Station, building from scratch one of Australia's most successful national youth media channels. Through his radio career, he also became a Station Director and Executive Producer on Sydney's 2RDJ FM88.1, and was featured on 2AC, 2CR, TVB and other media locally and overseas. Being raised in broadcast media, he learned the art of front-facing presention, but also received training in back-end production including editing for TV, audio engineering, live event directing, stage management -- foundational skills that made him highly equipped as a team leader in live events.
Through his skills and experience, Sy established a corporate brand where he planned and hosted events for multinational corporations, Fortune500 companies, and even participated in production of large scale concerts and conferences. But he didn't find his passion until 2011 when on one occasion, he was asked whether he would host a wedding, so in that first year he accepted 6 events. He became passionate about weddings because there was so much he could contribute in this area, being able to carry over all the skills to help couples plan their big day, so that they don't need to reinvent the wheel every time. In the year he accepted just over 30 events, and then the year after over 80. And so began his wedding planning career.
The early 2010s was a simpler time when the Sydney wedding industry was not as sophisticated as it is today. Inadvertently, Sy introduced the best practices of event production procedures into planning weddings, and developed systems tailored to the Sydney wedding industry standards. Many procedures he and his team created are now adopted as industry standards. For many years Sy organised the Sydney Asian Wedding Expo aboard Starship Sydney, establishing standards in the Asian wedding market. To this day this event series remains as Australia's largest Asian bridal event with bridal shows, stalls, presentations and seminars that attracted over 1000+ guests.
By 2024, Event Weddings has hosted over 1000+ weddings across 200+ venue locations in Sydney and interstate and is Sydney's leading Asian wedding production house with an in-house gown studio.
After more than 1,000 weddings, Sy believes that a great MC requires:
* Balance of preparedness and good organisation with creative live interaction
* Having a strong authoritative presence without being rude
* Professional but personal, presentable and not over the top
* Personality without self-indulgence, proper and appropriate humour because a wedding is a wedding and not a comedy show
But for a Wedding MC, stage presence is only half the job. Sy believes that a good MC must also have genuine understanding of the entire events ecosystem and have at least some knowledge of every element that makes up a wedding. An MC needs to know how a sound system works, what photographers and videographers need, how venue service works, along with the personal aspects behind the scenes, and maybe even can hold two glasses and one bottle of champagne, and gracefully pour with 200 people are watching.
Couples who attend our weddings do notice something different, not one big thing but all the little small things. These are the things that makes Sy's wedding just feel a bit different.
